6:15 pm - donate to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin's name!
[for all my friends that this has not reached yet...]

Instead of (in addition to?) us all sending around more emails about
how horrible she is, let's all make a donation to Planned Parenthood.
in Sarah Palin's name.

And here's the good part: when you make a donation to PP in her
name, they'll send her a card telling her that the donation has
been made in her honor. Here's the link to the Planned
Parenthood website:

https://secure.ga0.org/02/pp10000_inhonor

You'll need to fill in the address to let PP know where to send
the "in Sarah Palin's honor" card. I suggest you use the address
or the McCain campaign headquarters, which is:

McCain for President
1235 S. Clark Street
1st Floor
Arlington , VA 22202

PS make sure you use that link above or choose the pulldown of
"DONATE - HONORARY OR MEMORIAL DONATIONS", not the regular "Donate
Online"

8:28 pm - ATTENTION KNITTING FRIENDS
EZ february baby sweater: HALP

man, i think i really messed this one up. if you are familiar with this pattern, could you please comment and let me know what i SHOULD have done? i don't think i got it right.

EZ's "pithy" instructions really got me when it came to the sleeves and i seriously spent days and days trying to figure out what the hell she meant. i also did not want to seam the sleeves as directed, so i did what i THOUGHT would be ok for working the sleeves in the round, using whatever weirdo logic i could muster up:

when it came time for the sleeve divide, i put 28 stitches on waste yarn for each sleeve opening. when i got to the next row, i COd 14 stitches at each sleeve opening, with the intention of picking up the bottom 14 stitches and then working the sleeve in the round after i was done with the body.

i am halfway through the first sleeve and it looks HUGE. even huger than the rest of the sweater looks. did i royally screw this up?

(x-posted to some knitting communities)

EDIT: NEVER MIND!!! a friend of mine reminded me to check gauge, and it turns out i am getting 4 stitches to the inch using dpns as opposed to the 5 per inch i got for the body. WHOOPS.

12:58 am - message to 1992
16 years later and lloyd cole's "she's a girl and i'm a man" still rips my stupid heart out. it is probably the only song that makes me long for being young and lonelier times. i don't think i have ever wished that i was a kid again, but every once in a great while i wish i was 14 and imagining my future instead of living it.

9:18 pm - MY RESOLUTIONS!!!1
just kidding.

HOWEVER, i do plan to:
--knit bigger stuff (kristennn on ravelry, dawgz)
--eat more oatmeal
--52 more movies in 2008 (this went pretty well in 06 and 07, so hay)
--debt reduction! (which i started a while ago but HOPEFULLY will be mostly gone this year)

tonight i'm listening to todd rundgren and reading this book about kids and parents that is so hilarious and made me lol in the bathroom and watching this john waters one man show-type thing and baking apple-carrot-oat bran muffins. i will work on my Clap and i will also make a harajuku doll with gwen stefani.

If you woke up first thing in the morning, and saw that I was in the bed with you, what would your first thought be?

Leave your answer in the comments and then post the question to your journal.

**this is kind of a trick meme because i already gave the best answer to the person who posted it originally, which is "haaaaay"

11:09 pm - somebody's getting maaaaarrrrrieeeedddd
yesterday doug asked me a Very Important Question, the one that goes "will you marry me?"
of COURSE i said yes!

THE WILLOUGHROCK-PICKLEBEES
or
THE MOSURBY-PICKLETONS

here is the story (apologies to board people who have read it ten times already):

we were puttering around saturday morning. it was very sweet with lots of nice talks. we talked about the night before (which was his regular dj night and a general awesome time for all), talked about our families and family stuff in general, then we went and made a really delicious big breakfast and ate it and cleaned up together. he was supposed to go to a show that afternoon but he was like "i'm not going to any show this afternoon, i just want to lay around here and be near you" and i was like "ok ^__^"

he was watching tv and i was computing in the craft room and i got up and went to sit next to him but he was laying out on the couch so i kind of got on top of him and we were talking and being smoochy and he was like "let's get married" and i was like "ok" but we say that all the time, so then he looks at me and is like "will you marry me?" and i was like "...for real?" and he said "yes!" and i was like "YES!" then he was like "i don't have a ring but i will get you one...oh wait" and then reached over to the table and found this key ring thing and puts it on my hand and the hilarious thing is that it fits perfectly! i am still wearing it! and since i haven't taken off the key ring since, we are going to somehow going to get a proper jeweler person to make a version of the key ring in a durable metal that will not rust so i can wear it 4 life.

we are really boring engaged people who haven't decided on any details and will probably not actually have a wedding for another two years, but we are pretty stoked on this anyway.

5:27 pm - WEEKEND FACTS.
i've lost my knitting mojo. the last three things i've knitted have come out terribly.

i spent six hours in an emergency room with a sick friend.

i had a "night of 1000 buddies" were i got hugged and complimented all night. everyone was beautiful and handsome.

the "be your own pet" kids showed up at the bar. are they even OLD enough to be at a bar?

i drank two "margavezas," which are mexican beers with frozen margarita on top.

the crusties who sat across from me in the emergency room smelled 100 times worse than all the homeless people in there combined. even the one who was picking at his head staples.

i am watching all of the show "spaced" and it is pretty good.

pop-tarts. am i right??

a street fair is happening near me and i got the bubble tea guy to make me an avocado mango smoothie one and he was like UHHH OKAY and i had to assure him that i've had it before and it is divine. (one love to BeBoBa of Chicago, IL)

we've rented "factory girl" to watch later, which should be a hoot.

new best-smelling product is johnson and johnson "melt away stress" lotion. four stars, johnsons.

what is my knitting problem?

current mood: hm.

Okay so Wah Wah New York Is Expensive and all but I tell you what: there is SO MUCH FREE STUFF TO BE HAD HERE. Everybody has an "in" someplace, everybody "knows somebody," everybody can get you a deal. We have paid to see bands about four times since I moved here, which is awesome considering I see bands probably three or four times a month. I get a ton of free books all the time from my job (and also went to the Book Expo for free and got a ton there AAAAND made a connection with a person at one of my favorite publishers with an open offer for free stuff). Free passes to the moma. Free crap handed to me on the street because I work in a high-traffic area. Free movie passes at the record store. Free junk on the street (though I do not partake due to fear of bedbugs). Free records from all my music industry friends. Free drinks because I'm the DJ's girlfriend and sometimes I bring baked goods. Other cool junk that is not necessarily FREE but still awesome, like our Urban Outfitters adventure last weekend, sitting in the VIP section, pre-invites to sample sales and other chaotic events. Free coffee because I went to get some for the CEO. I never got free crap like this in Chicago, and I knew errrrrrrrybody (or I felt like it, anyway).

Also I have reached a stage in my life where I sometimes talk like Prairie Dawn.

11:07 am - oh girl!
Buffalo Tom, right? I was actually stoked to see them, especially after we got to the show and I spent the entirety of the Moving Targets' set thinking about how it has been 15 years since My Greatest Summer: partially spent in the basement with the lagoon-blue cement with the one friend I had left, partially spent in the too-hot attic bedroom, painting and listening to the radio with a pen and paper always at my side so I could write down all the songs and bands I liked best. I always hated the video for "Taillights Fade" but I definitely loved the song, not nearly as much as I liked "Larry" (which I am pretty certain was playing the first time I had sex, which I just realized this very moment) but was still pretty good.

And man, if I ever write a book, it will be about that summer and maybe the two after it. I had three consecutive mid-teen mid-90s summers that were the best. Just spectacular. I spent a long time feeling vaguely pathetic that some of the best times of my life were when I was 14-15-16, but hey--are things ever going to be as MAGICAL and LIFE-ALTERING and DRAMATIC as they were then? Maybe, I guess, but I look back on that time so fondly, even the parts when I hated everybody and wanted to do embarrassing things like run away from home just to see who would really miss me. Like, I wake up every morning because I hope to GOD that I'll experience something that will hit me half as hard as it would have at age 15. And sometimes things actually do!

I suppose that sounds jaded but I experience magical things pretty often. I'm glad I moved to New York because it has opened the door for more magic in my life, and maybe in 15 more years I will speak as fondly about Mid-00s Kristen. And hey, I think it is a testament to my personal effort to keep it real that Teenage Kristen would probably think Age 29 Kristen is really cool. Haw haw.

Okay but the rest of my weekend:

Doug and I went to some in-store at Urban Outfitters because all media-types got to shop in the closed store at 40% off before the performance. The performance was by "El-P" and our review of it is "Let us know when you find a beat, son." Then we had ramen at Minca (5th St. between A and B) and it was so good that we are going back there for dinner today! MISO RAMEN I LOVE YOU.

Lizz came home from France and brought me a BERET and a BAGUETTE PEN. There are no words to explain how much both those things delight me! Then we went shopping and had 100 Laffs, as usual. I bought so many good snacks! Ideally I will not have to spend money on food at work for at least the next two weeks. Here's hoping.

Then I got heat exhaustion. Again. WHYYYYYYY does the heat affect me so differently now? I was never such a wimp about it but now if I'm not belly-slosh full of water at all times I get all headachey and weary and barfy-feeling. F U, old age.

And a special F U to the car service guy who had "Black Ice" scented air fresheners on every interior surface of his car when I was at the height of my barfiness.

Also:
Bloody Mary
black and white striped hoodie
flop tan
mineral makeup, who knew?
"Under the Bridge" in my head for like three weeks now, thanks LIZZ

10:33 am - happiness is all the rage
--I feel great today!
--Here is my fancy eyeshadow: mac "Rose Blanc" ("soft yellow-gold with gold pearl") with Medusa "Electric Pink" all around as a liner. SUP.
--I got bummed out yesterday because my bf is kind of a crab about the world. I knew that a year and a half ago when I started dating him, but sometimes he is ESPECIALLY a crab about the world and it bums me out so completely. However, I am over it.
--Summer Fridays at work, which means I am leaving at 1 and then being a Lady of Leisure for the rest of the day. I am planning on going to the gym and making a trip the post office, but I think I will also take a long walk someplace and maybe read a book.
--Tonight I am seeing BUFFALO TOM. What? If they do "Larry" I will probably faint.
--My boss was on the news last night and today she was on the Today Show! If she gets any more famous, I wonder if I can change my job title to "Celebrity Handler" and shoo paparazzi away from her as she gets Starbucks.
--I realize I have a Picking Problem when it comes to cuticles/nails but my thumbs are falling apart at the seams over here. Am I molting?

THINGS AND ITEMS
--ginger tea
--personal Promise Ring revival
--book swappin'
--makeup swappin' with Skolnik
--how many gold eyeshadows can one person own
--that song that goes "slow dancin', swayin' to the music"
--PRINT GOCCO IN MY LIFE STARTING TODAY

current mood: fine, thanks

11:05 am - bonjour! bonjour!
Lately I can only write in the form of short work emails, text messages, beauty product reviews, or lists, so here is a list:

--It was a long time coming, but I have finally reached New York Happiness. I think I am going to stick around for a while.
--I am considering crashing the first birthday party of a baby I almost babysat for once. The baby in question is a friend of friends and I really enjoy her flickr!
--I am a babyhag. Keep updating your flickrs, moms and dads!
--Lizz took this photo for me in France:

Her caption reads: this little girl was calling, "bonjour! bonjour!" to a pigeon about 10 feet away. her mother saw me take this photo and angrily stepped in between me and her daughter. I have hung this on my cubicle because it is the happiest picture I have seen in some time.
--Related: I have determined that I feel happiest and most creative when there are children in my life. There aren't many right now, which is the hugest bummer!
--Again, keep updating your flickrs, moms and dads! (Special thanks to Jane for always sending me phone pictures of rad babies and children, and to Angela for being pregnant.)
--Enviga. Fizzy. Refreshing. Delicious. I still feel like a MORAN for regularly enjoying something labeled as a "calorie burner" (especially one that includes aspartame) but they are a treat for me! It's like a Fresca, but it keeps you awake for a while.
--The true result of me not regularly attending the gym in the past few months is THE RETURN OF KNEE PAIN. Remember five years ago when Sean regularly teased me about my bum knee? Not to be Donna Summer but this time I know it's for real. Smell you tomorrow, elliptical.
--I have been making a lot of ridiculous hats lately, but the last two have been TOO ridiculous and will now be unraveled.
--Oh P.S. I'm doing two craft fairs this fall.
--Speaking of making stuff, do you need any 1'' buttons? I AM YOUR GIRL.

Love,
Grizzlebee
